APHELION

Roughly two weeks after the summer solstice the Earth reaches its apsis Aphelion – the point when the sun is furthest from the Earth. Spit & Sawdust and Global Gardens are celebrating this time with a day-long event that will include artworks by artists Johana Hartwig and Anthony Shapland, workshops, communal meals and actions. A chance to pause and ponder the dark and light, day and night, the opposites, extremes, natural cycles, patterns and rhythms of our world. ……………………………………………………………………………… TIMETABLE Everyone is welcome to join us at any point throughout the day. It is not necessary to book, but an indication if you are coming would be appreciated so we can cater for everyone. PLEASE NOTE: This event has two locations. GLOBAL GARDENS 6am-4.30pm 6am: Johana Hartwig dawn chorus audio installation, ‘As clear as the day is long’. Continues throughout the day, this first hour is a chance to experience it in the quiet stillness of the morning while there is no other activity in the garden. 6.30-11am or so, Johana Hartwig ‘Days Eyes’. 'Llygaid y dydd' translates from Welsh as 'Day eyes'. Day eyes or daisies make up around 10% of all flowering plants on earth. Tea and conversation around this flower. 7am: Communal Breakfast made by Global Gardens and Spit & Sawdust. 8.30-10.30am: Making and cooking together. Join in preparing food that will be eaten throughout the day – the emphasis will be on foods that need the duration of the day to process such as pickling, marinating, stewing. 10.30am-1pm: Listen to an ant colony on the allotment with sound geographer Jonathan Prior. 11am - 1pm. Workshop led by Aurora Trinity Collective. Houses for Animals / Shelters for circadian rhythms. Share and learn skills in felting to make homes for wildlife. 11am – 4pm: Global Garden’s weekly gardening session. Join Global Gardens and their regular volunteers tending to the herbs, vegetables and plants in the garden and take something harvested home with you. There will also be a range of herbs available for donation.

1pm: Shared Lunch made by Global Gardens, followed by dough making for the evening meal. 4.30pm: Walk to Spit & Sawdust from Global Gardens, with some watery pauses by Johana Hartwig, making contact with Roath brook, thinking about access points along the route. The walk will take 1-1.5 hours. SPIT & SAWDUST 6-9pm 6-9pm: Anthony Shapland ‘Between the Dog and the Wolf’ A collection of works and observations, influences and ideas around the shift from day to night. Between the Dog and the Wolf is more like a series of notes than a finished work, some of them recurring thoughts, others are tangents or dead-end sentences. 6.30-8pm: Shared Dinner made by Spit & Sawdust. …………………………………………………………………………… Image credit: Anthony Shapland …………………………………………………………………………….

Location information Global Gardens Located just off Whitchurch Road – turn down Sachville Avenue and take the first lane on the left. Follow the perimeter of the allotment until you reach a turning on the right. Turn right and follow the perimeter until you reach a gate on the right. If you search GLOBAL GARDENS CARDIFF you will find a pinned location. We encourage people to travel sustainably to the site – there is a bike park. There is also limited parking on site for those with limited accessibility. Spit & Sawdust Off Newport Road. Turn onto Rhymney River Bridge road, our big yellow will be on your right. Buses 44 / 45 / 49 / 50 from the City Centre run up Newport Road, get off at Ipswich Road stop by Morrisons. We have plenty of parking and bike racks. …………………………………………………………………………..
